Timbre Rock & Roots 2011

OCBC Titanium Presents Timbre Rock & Roots returns on Friday and Saturday, 15 and 16 April 2011 with an even more explosive line-up of world-class musicians, multiple GRAMMY Awards winners and nominees. To be held at the beautiful Marina Promenade on the Singapore Grand Prix F1 tracks behind the Singapore Flyer, the two evenings promise to be exciting and alternative night outs of soul-spinning music entertainment.

The strength of last year’s artists line-up (The Fray; Buddy Guy; Gipsy Kings; Jools Holland & His R&B Orchestra; Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®) was just the tip of the iceberg. This year’s artists alone produced 26 Grammy Awards and even more nominations.

“OCBC Titanium Presents Timbre Rock & Roots 2011 artists were programmed carefully. Singapore is the first stop for these artists before they embark on Australian tours and we are proud to say that this year’s bill is a fine balance between diversity, mainstream favs and with a couple of surprises from our coup.” say Mr. Edward Chia and Mr. Peter Noble, Co-Festival Directors.

Each festival night will see at least three headlining acts taking to the stage playing full sets. Rock & Roots continues its mandate to present great acts but still remains accessible – certainly a value-for-money proposition compared to the current live music climate.

“We are taking a risk charging such affordable prices for the market here but we want as many people enjoy the festival. Basically one gets to enjoy at least four top-notch concerts on one night with just a single-day pass! Once audience numbers grow, it is one step closer to our objective to expand Rock & Roots line-up and for someday to be as extensive as Bluesfest.” says Mr. Peter Noble, Co-Festival Director.

2011 artists line-up includes: Bob Dylan, John Legend, Imogen Heap, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Toots & The Maytals, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Raw Earth with more to be announced.

Timbre Rock & Roots’ programming crown this year surely goes Bob Dylan, celebrated poet, artist, singer, writer, actor and radio announcer. From being hailed as the definitive songwriter of the ’60s protest movement to alienating his folkie-audience by recording an electric album to his continual re-invention of himself, the creation of timeless classic songs: ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ – ‘All Along The Watchtower’ – ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ – ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ – ‘Hurricane’ and so many, many more. Dylan’s career span more than 50 recorded albums over six decades, is listed in Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Important People of the Century’, a seventeen-time Grammy® Award winner and recipient of a Academy Award – presents a deceptively simple proposition. To keep performing where he is most comfortable: on stage year after year.

“Bob Dylan is a living legend who has influenced so many musicians from different genres including some legends themselves such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Guns & Roses, Rage against The Machine, White Stripes to Norah Jones. It’s a rare chance for music lovers in Singapore to pay homage to a man who has given the world of music so much.” Says Danny Loong, Chief Creative Director of Timbre Group, Bandleader of Raw Earth

Lovers of old school soul fused with the dynamism of modern roots music and hip-hop – take note. John Legend is performing on the Saturday of the festival weekend and this six time Grammy award winner, and recipient of the special Starlight award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is destined to blow your sweet soul clean away!

The success of alternative synthpop singer-songwriter Imogen Heap’s first concert last year in Singapore warrants another encore performance at Timbre Rock & Roots. The outdoor festival atmosphere will add another dimension to the concert dynamics so this is going to be a unique opportunity even for fans who have caught her show the last time round!

From his punk and hip-hop beginnings in his bands Beatnigs and The Disposable Heroes of HipHoprisy through the nineties incarnations of Spearhead to the Michael Franti & Spearhead of today, Michael Franti has found his own voice Click Here!">musically and his own organic brand of popular success melding funk, reggae, jazz, folk and rock with hip hop into powerful and resonating social commentary beats. With the timely release of his latest album The Sound Of Sunshine on 28 March 2011 in Singapore, it is the right time to catch Franti’s debut appearance, one that is bound to be inspiring and buoyant. Truly a sound of sunshine on rainy days.

Toots & The Maytals have been credited with coining the word “reggae” with their hit single back in 1968 called “Do the Reggay”. Since then, they carved themselves an international reputation in the early ‘70s with hit singles Funky Kingston and Reggae Got Soul. Their 2004 album, True Love won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Two years later, the follow-up Light Your Light was nominated for the same Grammy category. Now their latest 2010 album Flip and Twist is living up to the legend status that precedes it.

Another up-and-comer and Grammy Award nominee, Trombone Shorty is a killer on both trombone and trumpet. Surrounding Trombone Shorty is his band, Orleans Avenue – Mike Ballard on bass, Pete Murano on guitar, Joey Peebles on drums – virtuosos every one. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue perform for the very first time at Timbre Rock & Roots following a series of blistering tour performances that have earned them a rabid and ever-growing following. They manage an energy-level few can sustain…an explosive combination of funk, rock, R&B and hip-hop Shorty calls – “Supafunkrock.”

Made up of a stellar line-up consisting of some of Singapore’s best blues and rock musicians – Danny Loong and Francis Chan (Ublues), Victor Chen (winner of Strip Acoustic at Wala Wala), Surath Godfrey and Lin Hanrong from rock outfit Reverie, Raw Earth will be opening Friday’s evening festivities with an old school flavour – music style from the ‘50s to ‘70s.

More artists and bands to be announced soon.

Complementing the dynamic artists line-up is the delectable range of food and beverage merchants onsite and other classic festival activities.

More tiers of tickets have been introduced for this year’s festival to appeal to a wider range of festival-goers. Students and NSF enjoy a concessionary rate of only SGD 70* for a single-day pass. For die-hard fans, a Premium Pass (SGD 150* to SGD 200*) has been created allowing access to an area right in front of the stage. In addition, the Premium Pass comes with a lawn chair to be redeemed on site so holders can choose to sit in comfort (and bring home too to continue basking in the Timbre Rock & Roots experience) in this general admission event. As per last year, limited Early Bird Passes (SGD 90* to SGD 120*) are also available. OCBC Cardmembers also enjoy exclusive ticket rates (SGD 81* to SGD 171*) while stocks last.

Tickets are available from SISTIC (website:www.sistic.com.sg; hotline: +65 6348 5555). Priority booking period for OCBC Card Members from 21 January to 4 February 2011. Public sales go on from 5 February 2011. Ticket prices range from SGD70* to SGD 200*.

JJ – One-night-only Concert At Helipad

4imaginaryboys presents the critically acclaimed Swedish ambient-indie electropop sensation, JJ, for a one-night-only concert at Helipad in Singapore. JJ will perform on 12 February 2011 (Saturday) as one of their two stops in Asia. Tickets for the Singapore show are available at SGD35 till 11 February 2011, and SGD45 at the door on 12 February 2011. Ticket sales will be available from 22th January at 4imaginaryboys.wordpress.com and LEFTFOOT Click Here!">CINELEISURE (cash mode only).

About JJ
Who is JJ? That was the question on everybody’s mind when JJ first started out. Sweden’s JJ quietly released one of 2009's most critically-acclaimed albums. The album was named jj nº 2 and it was the group’s debut full-length (their first single was jj nº 1, released in the same year). Both the debut single and album received countless accolades from critics including a Best New Music inclusion from Pitchfork Media with ratings of 8 and 8.6 respectively. At the end of 2009, Paste named jj n° 2 “The Year’s Greatest Click Here!">Musical Obscurity” and The Washington Post named the album the second best pop album of the year in front of Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion and behind Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night.

Despite all the media attention, the duo (Joakim Benon and Elin Kastlander) kept themselves shrouded in mystery, allowing their music to do the talking. All the fans and critics had were a tastefully enigmatic presentation of their music and a distinctive sonic hallmark in the form of Elin’s achingly beautiful smooth alto.

SPIN Magazine rightfully described JJ as “pushing the boundaries of ambient music with a combo of indie pop, acid house, new age, electro, hip-hop, and Caribbean elements, all paired with singer Elin Kastlander’s aching vocals. The result: an euphoric sound as soothing as lying on a private beach in St. Barts.”

Influential British music magazine, NME, said: “For us, discovering JJ is how we’ve learned to connect with this higher state we knew was there but couldn’t reach before.” and had them as one of the “50 Best New Bands of 2010?.

Aside from their official releases, JJ has also done several covers and new takes on contemporary songs. For example, the hip hop loving duo recorded covers of Akon’s “Troublemaker”, Jeremih’s “Birthday Sex” and most recently, The Dream’s “Right Side of My Brain” with the title changed to “No More You” and a mash up of The xx’s “Intro” and Lil Wayne’s “Money In My Mind” titled “I’m The One/ Money On My Mind”.

On Christmas Eve 2010, JJ released their 3rd album, Kills, completely for free, as a direct download, at Sincerely Yours website. It is a mixtape featuring re-workings of famous tracks by Kayne West, Dr Dre, M.I.A., Jay-Z and Akon. After just three days since being released, Kills had been downloaded more than 30,000 times, a number generated from only two of the several file hosting services.

From March to April 2010, JJ was the specially invited supporting act for the US nationwide tour of the 2010 Mercury Prize winner, The xx. Following the US tour, JJ went on a minor tour through Europe with dates in Italy, France and Belgium among others.

DISCO VENDETTA
feat. INQUISTIVE W/KILL THE NOISE (US)

Nothing like an action film or a superhero movie or even really science fiction, Disco vendetta is a brand new night of futuristic revolution. Rebellious and risky, subversive and seductively dangerous, anarchist Inquisitive takes a mystery guest under his wing each instalment, as he embarks upon his strategy of dance floor destruction to liberate all patriarchal-subdued souls confined in bodily state.

KILL THE NOISE
From Los Angeles, California, Jake Stanczak better known as Kill The Noise has exploded into the Electro House scene, since he launched the project in January of ’08. His productions have earned him recognition from both house music fanatics and world class DJ’s alike. Success in the studio has created many interesting opportunities for the young producer. Most notably a busy worldwide touring schedule, a record label partnership with the infamous DJ Craze, and most recently an invitation to perform on Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope World Tour in North America.

It seems that whatever sector of electronic music Kill The Noise draws influence from, it is executed with the same level of quality and production mastery that has become expected from him. His sound has resonated around the world and has been embraced by both veterans and newer generations of artists and enthusiasts.

This year is already shaping up to be huge for Kill The Noise with a truckload of new material in the pipelines including a debut album in the works. Perhaps the most ambitious and exciting plan for this year is the announcement of Kill The Noise and DJ Craze’s joint venture: “Slow Roast Records”. The label will feature long awaited original works from Kill The Noise, DJ Craze, DJ Klever and many others. The label will highlight the diversity of the artists involved and continue the trend of evolution that they are know for.

STANTON WARRIORS (UK)

The STANTON WARRIORS are the baddest booty-shakin’, genre-mashing, beats ‘n’ bass freaks in the dance scene.

The duo made up of Dominic Butler & Mark Yardley, started in the south west of England in the early/mid 1990s. In 2001, Stanton Warriors started the seminal ‘Stanton Sessions’ mix compilation which saw off competition from Fat Boy Slim and Deep Dish to win Best Album at the Dance Star Awards, earned them the cover of DJ Mag, and again at the Muzik Mag Awards where they beat Dave Clarke and Danny Tenaglia. Mixmag later named ‘Stanton Sessions’ as one of the Top 20 mix albums of all time.

‘Stanton Sessions’ went on to become the biggest selling breaks album of all time with high profile remixes for luminaries such as Missy Elliot, Fat Boy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Mylo, Freeform Five, and Busta Rhymes, whilst their own original material continues to push the boundaries.

Stanton DJ sets are famed for incorporating exclusive original tracks mixed with homemade edits/remixes of cutting-edge sounds from underground house through to abstract hip hop and everything in between. It is all blended into a melting pot of low-down booty electro punkishness, and is continuously reminding the world why Stanton Warriors have remained unrivalled in their genre for more than a decade.

Most recently, the Warriors won Best Compilation/Mix for their “Stanton Sessions Vol.3” at this year’s Breakspoll Awards hosted by one of the world’s best clubs – Fabric, and Best DJ Award for the second year, beating a field that included previous winners Krafty Kuts and Plump DJ’s. They were also voted No. 1 Breaks DJs in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 for the past two years. Following hot on the heels of their double-whammy award win at Breakspoll, the Warriors have picked up a much coveted Best Breaks Act Award on the Beatport Music Awards.

GREG DOWNEY (UK)

Belfast-born trancer began DJing over six years ago and has already established himself as one the best young DJs and producers in the trance scene.

Currently at no. 82 of Top 100 DJs, Greg’s unique style is a combination of underground and uplifting trance with elements of techno. In 2007, Greg’s remix of ‘Heaven Scent’ has claimed the number 1 spot on Beatport, Trackitdown and Audiojelly for over a month. This prompted John Digweed to give the remix a full release!

The trance master then enjoyed huge success with his own track ‘Vivid Intent’, which Armin Van Buuren picked as his ‘tune of the week’ on A State Of Trance! Shortly after Greg was snapped up by Paul van Dyk for his label Vandit, his first release ‘Stadium’ was a huge success and was Mixmag’s Cream Ibiza anthem of 2008! Paul van Dyk also chose Greg to remix his track ‘New York City’. Downey’s next single was ‘Show Time’ for Dutch heavy weights Spinnin which reached number 1 on Trackitdown and number 2 on Beatport. The prolific producer went on to create the huge remix of ‘Everything But The Girl – Missing’, which has clocked up over 60,000 hits on youtube with massive support from all the A-list DJs. Greg recently teamed up with The lead singer from Mansun, Paul Draper to remake their classic track ‘Wide Open Space’ which successfully crosses over onto daytime Radio One with support from Scott Mills and Vernon Kay. The track was chosen by Mixmag as their tune of the month for July and predicted to be the track of the summer. GD’s latest single ‘Send The Gods’ on Spinnin is setting clubs alight around the world and storming its way up the charts right now.

Greg recorded his first Live As album on Discover. Recorded live from his native Ireland at their biggest Festival Planet Love, his debut compilation captured Greg’s energy as a DJ and was featured as “Album of the Month” in Mixmag!

2009 saw the beginning of Global Code, Greg launched his own radio show and podcast – Global Code – on the industry-leading station DI.FM garnering thousands of loyal listeners and subscribers who tune into his sound across the airwaves.
